The Pilates Method consists of mat exercises and/or exercises on various pieces of resistance equipment developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. The resistance movements create muscular strength, but also facilitate stretching to a greater degree than can be achieved by merely working the body against itself. Every part of the body is worked intrinsically in order to conform philosophically with the system’s wholistic nature. All parts of the physical structure work together, and balance must be achieved for efficient movement. Many approaches emphasize dividing parts in resistance exercise and over development, and imbalance invariably occurs. The Pilates Method gives its practitioner an excellent supplemental or complimentary approach that can be integrated into any other form of exercise. With its emphasis on exact form, this method gives maximum results for effort expended. Many work very hard and are frustrated by not seeing the rewards that they seek. The Pilates Method strives to provide rapid changes in the body for individuals serious about their intent. It is used extensively for physical therapy and rehabilitation as well. Benefits: Increases muscle strength and flexibility. Uses: Assists recovery from accidents and injuries and for general conditioning.
